Clint Eastwood, Betty White and Maxine (the Comic Character)

At Joplin Elder Law, we love what we do! Who wouldn’t want the opportunity to possibly meet the real life versions of the above characters at work every day? Some of the stories we hear from our senior clients are pretty amazing, inspiring and, most of the time, they give pretty darn good advice.

The Golden Girls, Grumpy Old Men, Second Hand Lions, The Mule, The Bucket List… I could keep going but you get the idea. There’s a reason why these shows are so popular. Seniors have made and continue to make amazing contributions to their families, communities and society. Their wisdom, experience and perspective are invaluable.

Getting older isn’t all about the negative and the inevitable. There are many perks that come with aging.

 Advantages of Growing Older

You appreciate and respect yourself. When you were younger, you may have had trouble with this. You may have been so concerned about meeting other people’s expectations and making a good impression that you lost sight of your uniqueness.

Aging helps you let go of these burdens. It is no longer important what others think of you. From your weight to your hobbies, you no longer need to impress anyone. You accept yourself as you are, even though you are not perfect.

You are able to recognize your accomplishments. In the past, you may have thought all of your accomplishments were not enough. Perhaps you compared yourself to others or felt you did not measure up to someone else’s standards.

As a senior, you see there is much to be proud of in your life. During the decades of your past, you may have raised a family, worked hard at your job, and made some types of contributions to your community. Not only are your accomplishments meaningful and important to you, they are meaningful and important to all the people you touched. You see you have made a difference in many people’s lives.

It’s easier to socialize. During the years you have lived through, you have learned to understand other people’s viewpoints, learned how to make compromises, and learned how to consider multiple ways of resolving difficulties.

Whether you are socializing with friends, family members, or in the community, these characteristics you learned from experience are important assets. People enjoy and appreciate your company.

You have more time for you. When raising your children or performing your job are tasks you have already completed, you have more free time for yourself. You can take on a new hobby, or you can return to an interest you had in the past. You have plenty of time to relax and have fun.

Better perspective when facing difficulties. When you are facing a difficulty, you are less likely to need advice from someone else. Although you may need help at times, you are better able to handle small problems without assistance. You often notice that you can draw on your experience to resolve a problem you have today.

You are not bothered as much by trivialities and negativity. You can take each day as it comes, without placing undue importance on minor annoyances. From disappointments to unexpected difficulties, coping is easier as you age. As you started growing older, you learned life is not perfect and life does not always go your way. While it may have been difficult to learn these lessons, they are useful to you as a senior.

With aging comes the viewpoint that life is special, and life is to be cherished. You want to make sure that you and your family will be cared for and your legacy passed down to the next generation. Consulting an elder law attorney can help you ensure that your wishes are fulfilled.
